Google Drive to Soon Backup WhatsApp Chat

Gadgets like Smartphone always throw some challenges to handle various applications running on it. The situation can become more complex with the new Smartphones being manufactured these days. There are various apps like WhatsApp that can be found on almost every Smartphone. So far, WhatsApp requires backing and restoring of the data at some point or other across all Android devices. It is a very geeky process involving a long chain of steps.

However, such a method is not convenient for every user. In order to deal with the hardship faced by many gadgetarian’s, WhatsApp is planning to come up with a simpler and easier mechanism for users to backup and restore the WhatsApp chat data. However, this hasn’t been made official yet.

According to the leaked information, WhatsApp will be using Google Drive to backup and restore chat histories.  This would avoid the need to search for the backup option from the memory and transfer to a new device, which is the current way of restoring the backup data to a new device.

The leaked information was in the form of screenshots, which revealed the integration of Google Drive in the WhatsApp. This feature is supported by the “timestamp” option for the last backup done and it’s corresponding “delete” option in the drive. Moreover, you also have the option to backup over Wi-Fi or utilize cellular data.

Some of the disclosed information reads as follows.

  • Google Drive requires a cellular data network to backup your data
  • Gives WhatsApp permission to backup chat history to Google Drive
  • Chat history except your videos will be backed up
  • Backup to Google Drive either via Wi-Fi or through the cellular network
  • Tap “%0.91€s” in case you couldn’t reach Google Drive

Moreover, based on the text, the restoring function will be offered only once for a new device. The user should accept the offer to restore the chat history from Google Drive, failing to which will make this option invalid forever.

The feature is intended to work initially just for the Android users; however, the developers could add iCloud support for the iPhone users as well.
